Irani Kovil (18th Jan 2010)

Irani Kovil is located in Iraniyur (10.2284°N 78.6504°E) near Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu, India. It is one of the 9 Kovils of the Nagarathars, built around 1278 A.D. And I belong to this Kovil. This Kovil is dedicated to Arulmigu Aatkondanathar and his consort Arulmigu Sivapurandevi. It lies 24 kms from Karaikudi. This Nagarathar temple is a magnificent piece of South Indian architecture.

Here is a Story about the Temple which our Ayya told us when we were kids. Lord Vishnu killed Iraniyan after attaining the form of Narasimha. After killing Iraniyan, no one was able to calm Narasimha’s fury. It is said that Lord Vishnu worshiped Lord Shiva at this Temple and only then he was able to regain his calm self. And hence this Name for the Temple. Apt to the story, I feel so calm, peaceful and happy when I am there at the Temple. It is one of the most Serene Temples in the World.

This is a dedication to one of my most favorite Temples in the World!

The Story of Stuff

Friday, November 20th, 2009 | Author: Vivek

You cannot run a linear system on a finite planet indefinitely!

I had registered for a course on “Sustainable Manufacturing” the coming semester and surprisingly this video suggested to me by Gowtham today, coincidentally provided me with an introduction for the course. “The Story of Stuff” is a 20-minute take on the perils of consumer culture. Though it is exaggerated, the video gives us a sense of the life cycle of material goods!

Activist Annie Leonard wrote and narrated this film. It was first launched online on December 4, 2007. The film exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues, and calls us together to create a more sustainable and just world. It’ll teach you something, it’ll make you laugh, and it just may change the way you look at all the stuff in your life forever.

The Not-So-Great Feeling!

Sunday, February 01st, 2009 | Author: Vivek

This post is in reply for my friends who have been asking me why i haven’t been blogging for a long time now. Everyone has been expecting me to write about my New Experiences, Send Photos and stuff. But really i haven’t been in a mood to do all that. I don’t know why, i just didn’t… feel like it!!! I didn’t feel like talking to anyone. Taking Photographs of the University. For that matter, Doing Anything. All i wanted to do was rush back home and sleep… I guess, im in an All-Time-Low in spirits! I tried to figure out what might be the reason for This Not-So-Great Feeling. Maybe, i was feeling Home-Sick. I have been denying that ever since i arrived here. But, it was taking a toll on me Indirectly. Naturally, it happens when you leave your Comfort Zone and move into Unfamiliar Territory. And i had a misunderstanding with two of my friends. We had a problem regarding the Housing, about which i don’t want to elaborate now. They are visibly angry on me and they haven’t spoken to me after that. This could be one of the reasons i was feeling depressed. And then comes my worst enemy, my Laziness… Club that with this Horrible Weather… The temperature went down to -25 deg Celsius last week… In this kind of weather, all i feel like doing is Sleep!!! In fact, that is what i have been doing all these days, apart from watching movies.

I am feeling a lot better now. I guess my Transition Period is over. Hoping for a New Start from this New Month! :)

Happy New Year 2009

New Year 2009

A New Year is unfolding - like a blossom with petals curled tightly concealing the beauty within…

Lord, let this year be filled with the things that are truly good… Let us Go forward with Great Hope that all things can be possible – with Your help and guidance!

Now, we are in a month named after the Roman god Janus, a very appropriate personification of the start of the New Year. This Roman god had two faces so that he could look ahead towards the future and back at the past at the same time. As we get rid of 2008 and look forward to 2009, we all try to be a little like Janus. We know through experience what we did wrong and what we did right, and hope to do better this year. Some people might make ambitious new year’s resolutions… But i have not… I am just going to take a deep breath and Hope for the Best… For U, For Me, For Everyone in this World! :)

Ban on Smoking in Public Places… frm today

Thursday, October 02nd, 2008 | Author: Vivek

More than Active Smoking, its Passive Smoking that causes more damage! So, I wholeheartedly welcome this ban. Most of the things our Health Minister, Anbumani Ramadoss plans to implement looks so correct to me frm my point of view. Like the 1yr extension of MBBS course etc.(Will write a diff post on that) He should try and ban selling of cigarettes!

After I started working, i see that most of the people here smoke. And the reason they give.. Work Pressure, Tension, Relaxing! I welcome the ban bcoz i feel that the ban will be only Good for them as well as the others who are near them too

Here are some details of the ban:

  • Penalty charges for smoking at in public places – Rs 200
  • Higher penalties for hotels and industries
  • Smoking prohibited in all indoor establishments
  • Companies can no longer have designated smoking rooms

Public Places Defined:

Auditoriums, cinema halls
Hospitals, health institutions
Railway stations, bus shelters
Restaurants, hotels, bars, pubs
Offices, libraries, courts
Markets, shopping malls
Airports
Discotheques, coffee houses
Schools, colleges, fun parks

So where should people smoke? In their own houses I guess or on the streets or in some designated closed space in a hotel. I don’t feel sorry for them. I don’t see why I should inhale passive smoke when it’s known to be bad for health. I have my rights.

Some people equate the ban to fascism and fanaticism:
What I don’t understand is why people are reacting with so much anger to this ban. For example, an article in the DNA has called this ban the work of fanatics! The ban on smoking in public spaces has been compared to bans against Valentine’s Day celebrations, Boys and Girls sitting together in public parks! What an odd comparison. I am totally against banning the above but I am all for banning smoking in public places as it physically harms others. I am against moral policing but I am all for the rules that will protect my health.

Another article (also in the DNA) by Pravin Nair says:

I just don’t believe it will work. Bans have never worked. Not on smoking…You only drive the problem underground and make it that much more difficult to deal with…

I am not worried smoking goes underground. If smoking goes underground, it is not my business. I just don’t want to get affected by it.

Is there any chance of this ban being overturned?
Anything is possible. The ban almost didn’t go through as tobacco giant ITC as well as the Federation of Hotel & Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI, the apex body of all hotel associations) have filed cases against it. Well, at least for now the Supreme Court is not listening. It shouldn’t. Commercial interest should never come before an individual’s interest.

I hope that the various tobacco and hotel lobbies do not pressurize the government to take back the ban.  Everyone of us has the right to breathe in a smoke-free environment and not get affected by the bad habits of others. And smokers and smoker’s lobbies and those whose business will be affected by the ban on smoking have no right to force us to inhale their poison! This isn’t about moral policing. It’s about the rights of non-smokers.

Well, I am not sure whether it will work, but I sure want to be on the right side of the law when I request someone to refrain from smoking.

The Story behind the Birth of this Website!

Wednesday, May 07th, 2008 | Author: Vivek

I started Blogging, more than year before! One of the reason for me starting a Blog is my Brother… My Brother and lots of these other supposed to be intelligent (are they really?!!) people i know of, are heavily into Blogs! (I call them intelligent because they are the select few who are into these hi-tech stuff, according to me. Maybe in the future, every person will have their own space in the virtual world.) So, i thought why don’t i too Try my hand at Blogging! I am not that Stupid, either!!! ;)

I usually start something with a whole lot of excitement and enthusiasm and that will fizzle out after some time! I never had time to (or was interested to) keep posting something in my Blogs over a long period of time! (But, i hope that this time, its not so!) The first blog i created was in Blogspot. It was www.rvivekshanmugam.blogspot.com! Most of the posts in my Blogspot Blog were copied frm other websites. I was told by many to stop this cut-copy-paste thing and start posting something on my own. And so i created another blog in wordpress recently, it was www.rvivekshanmugam.wordpress.com! It was kinda successful! And so it boosted my morale!

I had always wanted to create my own website, instead of posting in a free blogging site! I also came to know about various advantages of having one’s own Blog Site, the control I can have on my website and its contents, in all senses, through my friend Gowtham. And Thanks to him, now I’ve finally created my own website! Yay!!! :D

I would like to start this Blog with a Thank You note to Gowthaman. He helped me create this domain, host this website and in general showed me around this internet world. Thank you Gowtham. :)

And a huge Thank You and Welcome to my new readers! Please take a look around, make yourself comfortable, and join in by leaving a comment if you wish. I’m happy you’re here! :)
